Liquor prices hike up 70% from today in Delhi
Delhi is imposing a special corona fee on alcohol due to which the price of alcohol, across categories will rise by 70% from Tuesday.
The notification states that the excise will be “70 percent of the maximum retail price on all categories of liquor sold through retail licenses.”
Government-run alcohol shops opened on Monday for the first time since the lockdown was announced. There was crowding outside many of the 150-odd outlets despite innumerable appeals by authorities to maintain social distancing. In many areas, lathicharge was used by police to force shops shut.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said Delhi, a red zone, may have rushed into opening liquor shops. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned about the complete sealing of the areas if any violations occur.
The government amended the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, for the special fees. A spokesperson said the new rates will start Tuesday.
Delhi earns around Rs 500 crore per month from the sale of liquor.
